Your Guide to Using Medical Courier Services During Emergency Situations

If you’re like most people, you probably only think about medical courier services when you need one. However, there are times when it can be incredibly useful – even lifesaving.

In this article, we’ll discuss some of the most common emergencies where a medical courier service can be helpful, and we’ll explain what makes this service unique.

What is a Medical Courier Service and What Do They Do?

Medical couriers are a vital part of the medical community. They provide a service that is often necessary during emergencies. Their job is to transport medical supplies and equipment, including blood products and organs, between hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities. They can also provide transportation for patients who need to be moved to another facility for treatment.

How Can I Tell if a Situation Requires Emergent Status?

There are a few things to consider when determining if a situation is an emergency. One of the most important things to consider is the safety of the patients and medical personnel. Here are a few other factors to look for:

  • A shortage of blood in an OR or ER: In cases of severe blood shortages, every second counts. Emergent transportation may be necessary to get additional blood to the hospital as quickly as possible.
  • A need for an emergency organ transplant: When an organ becomes available for transplant, it must get to the recipient as soon as possible. Emergency transportation may be necessary to ensure that the organ arrives in time.
  • A blood transfusion that needs to be done quickly: In some cases, a blood transfusion may need to be done urgently. Emergency transportation after a blood donation can help to ensure that the blood arrives at the hospital as quickly as possible.

If you are unsure if a situation requires emergent status, please contact your local medical courier service. They can help you assess the situation and determine what steps need to be taken.

How Does Medical Courier Service Work?

Medical courier service generally works by sending a driver to pick up the medical items from the hospital or other location. The driver then transports the items to their destination. This can be done via car, truck, or plane. In some cases, they may also offer delivery services that can be helpful in cases where the recipient is not located near a hospital.

Next Flight Out (NFO) White Paper

Last weekend, one of our blood banks in Denver, Colorado required us to transport blood to a hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado. Typically a 5h41m transport, mudslides in Colorado had caused a variety of road closures between Denver and Colorado, increasing transport times to almost 7 hours. This would have bumped the transport price to over $800. Given the ramifications of the patient who needed blood, we needed to find another option.

As an Indirect Air Carrier (IAC), designated by the TSA, DHS, and FAA, Medi-Ops is honored to be able to provide Next Flight Out (NFO) services for our clients. Utilizing NFO allows us to ship blood, organs, and other human specimens via commercial airlines and our private network of operators. This service allows us to save even more lives while lowering costs for our clients.

Instead of driving the blood, we evaluated multiple flights and their cost effectiveness, while also considering time implications. Including the flight (scheduled through our NFO abilities), and the ground transport costs, we were able to lower the cost to 43% of the original ground transportation. We were also able to save hours of time, benefiting the patients in Grand Junction, and increasing access to care.

This service is often a fantastic alternative to longer transports of a variety of time requirements. Because we are an IAC, you can contact us to verify a known shipper. You also will have access to our 24/7 dispatch center, our unique algorithms, our private network of operators, and cost savings of this method of transport. We are also able to support your organization in its process of becoming a known shipper, or we can help ship unknown cargo.

A New Type of Emergency Medical Courier

We are so excited to announce Medi-Ops will be bringing a new kind of service to the medical community in Colorado and surrounding states. Throughout medical history, time has always been a valuable factor in the preservation of life. Life-threatening situations require prompt transport. Here in Colorado, traffic is constantly rising, increasing transport times to an unsafe level. This is why we have been working hard with our team, and the state of Colorado, to create a solution. Recently, Medi-Ops has been working with Colorado State Patrol to authorize our fleet as emergency vehicles! We are so excited to offer transport of blood, organs, and other specimens via a vehicle outfitted with over $8000 in emergency lighting and a multi-tone siren. This new service is proven to save hours during transportation of blood to receiving facilities. Recently, we spoke to the director of Parker Adventist Hospital about situations where this service is proved not just valuable, but life saving.

A young mom, eight and a half months pregnant, walks into the emergency room in extreme distress. Due to complications, the mom is immediately brought to labor and delivery for cesarean section. During the delivery, mom starts bleeding out. It becomes apparent to doctors and nurses that she needs a blood transfusion. At this point, the hospital calls a local blood bank and Medi-Ops is contacted for the emergency transport of the blood. Within minutes, a Medi-Ops team is activated and drives emergent to the blood bank. The blood is then carefully delivered to the receiving hospital just, in time to save the mothers life. These are the situations Medi-Ops deals with every day! We are excited to bring this new service to all of our clients – for blood transport, organ transport, and the alike.
